Keynote Presentation: Governance through Participation? Ethical Questions and Practical Implications for SynBio
Joint presentation with Matthias Braun.
Session "Ethics & Philosophy" | Wednesday, 2 Dec 2020 19:00 - 20:30
Abstract: While governance approaches are increasingly adapting to the complex and wicked problems of synthetic biology, the practical implications of those approaches in view of workable (long-term) public engagement strategies need further thought. We scrutinize and debate the role and meaning of public participation for different dimensions of governance and propose six focus areas for a future governance of synthetic biology. The emphasis lies on questions of structural innovation and the roles and responsibilities of researchers, funding institutions, stakeholders and legislators to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of what participation as governance might be able to achieve or not.
