Abstract: The synthesis of bottom-up synthetic cells has progressed rapidly in the last 20 years, and there are now many ways to mimic the structural/functional aspects of the living cell. However, the controlled agglomeration of individual protocells into prototissues is relatively unexplored. This research describes the adaptation of existing 3D printing technology to be able to pattern a state of the art coacervate protocell model into higher order structures. Such a platform will enable the investigation of biologically relevant molecular-scale phenomena in robust, multicellular, life-like systems; and provide an avenue for the application of synthetic cells to real world challenges.
